A while back I read a short powerful story highlighting the very reason why you should never give up on your dreams and why you should not allow others to manipulate and influence the way you think about your own abilities and how you want to live your life.
After reading the story, I remember thinking that it was a story that encapsulated the very reason why you should never give up on your dreams, but it is also a story which makes you realise that we as human beings are not far removed from the way Elephants think and how we too can also be conditioned by others.
Like Elephants, we can also be held back from striving to achieve and live the life we truly desire. It’s a very short story and one that I hope will empower you to make a change, especially if you are not achieving the kind of success you have always wanted and aspired to or finding it hard to take action on a dream or idea.
Here is the story called The Elephant Rope…
As a man was passing by a herd of elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being restrained by nothing but a small thin length of rope tied to their front legs. They had no chains, no cages holding them in. It was obvious that the elephants could at any time break away from the bonds and set themselves free, but for some reason, the elephants remained still.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to break away for their weak shackles and set themselves free.
“Well,” the trainer said, “when they were very young and much smaller we use the exact same size rope to tie them but at that age. it’s strong enough to hold them. By the time they have grown up, their minds have become conditioned to believe that no matter how much they try, they will never break the rope. They still believe that the thin line of rope can still hold them, so they never attempt to try and break themselves free anymore, they have become programmed even though with just a little effort given their size and strength, they could roam free if they tried.”
The man was amazed. These animals could, in an instant, break free from their bonds but because they had become programmed and conditioned to believe they could not, they were stuck and remained right where they were. They have allowed their past life and previous attempts to continue to hold them back. They ‘BELIEVE’ that there is no point in even trying anymore, as their attempts will be futile.
After reading this I sat and wondered for a moment. Like the elephants, how many of us actually go through life believing we cannot do something because we have convinced and conditioned ourselves that because we have tried and failed in the past, we think that is exactly what will happen if we were to try again now.
You cannot stop living your life based on past results, failure is part of our life’s great journey. Do not be afraid of failing, as failure is a great teacher that shows us where we are going wrong, so we can correct and continue moving ahead and never give up on your dreams.
Failures are the roadblocks in our journey that steer us towards our true life success and purpose.RHYS MORTON-ROSS
Failure is nothing to be embarrassed about, learn from them and keep going.
Stop allowing your negative self talk – the elephant rope mindset – to hold you back from achieving your ultimate existence, have courage, faith that you will become successful, so long as your inner self-talk is less of ‘I can’t’ and more ‘I can’ and keep taking those steps in the direction of your dreams regardless of how challenging things will become.
You do that and you will free yourself of the elephant rope mindset, and those shackles will break and set you free.
